XPeRT is a transitional keyboard layout patented around 2002 or 2003 that claims to be a faster alternative to QWERTY due to its greater emphasis on alternation (though not as high as Dvorak) and higher index and middle finger usage. Unusually among alt layouts, the creator sold a “software kit” to install the layout for US$29.

Kanata is a keyboard remapper that works on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

  1. Install Kanata by following “Step 1: Set Up Kanata” in Nova’s Kanata setup guide:

  2. Download the Kanata config file for the desired version of XPeRT:

  3. Make sure you know how to type your computer password using XPeRT.

  4. Run Kanata with the downloaded config file and make sure the layout works as you expect:

    kanata --cfg path/to/config.kbd
  5. To have XPeRT activate whenever your computer starts up, follow the instructions to “Automatically start Kanata”:
