Length on a keyboard is measured in units of “u.” 1u is the length of one “normal” key, such as the a key below:

Some keys are wider; for example, the left shift key on ANSI is 1.75u wide. On some split keyboards, keys can also be more than 1u tall, such as on the ErgoDox EZ. Lastly, ISO and JIS use an irregularly shaped enter key.
